I just found this on depeche-mode.com:
A new Sun news article is reporting Depeche Mode's frontman Dave Gahan says it upsets him that the band don’t win awards despite selling millions of albums. They are also doing a contest for some LHN and Best Of cds as well.
The Essex-born singer is fresh from Depeche’s sell-out Touring The Angel world tour with bandmates MARTIN GORE and ANDREW FLETCHER and the lads are as big as ever in the US.
But over here, Dave reckons, they rarely get credit for their 25-year career.
He says: “I don’t get it. We’re a band that has come out of England, lasted and done well. But no one seems to notice and it does hurt.
“It’s a struggle here to get recognition for what we’ve achieved.
“We’re that oddball band that people don’t know how to categorise. We don’t fit the rock category and are not pop.”
I think it’s a scandal Depeche have not been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Brits bosses.
When you think the SPICE GIRLS bagged one despite splitting after three albums, it makes a mockery of the system.
Depeche’s Best Of album hit shops this week and Dave reckons that they are unlikely to record any new material for five years.
So I think Brits bosses should take note — the band deserve credit for flying the flag for Britain around the world.
Surely that is worthy of a Lifetime Achievement gong?

I agree with Dave. It IS a mockery when a band like Spice Girls gets a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD when they've hardly been around. What bollocks!

I agree as well that Depeche deserves a lifetime achievement award. I can't believe the Spice Girls got one within their short time of fame! I don't want to start sounding like a jerk but I feel that if the system is that stupid to give the bloody Spice Girls a Lifetime Achievement Award then Dave shouldn't feel so hurt about Mode not getting one. Obviously the system has quite a few quarks in it. Dave also claims that "no one seems to notice and it does hurt" when referring to how well the band has done. I thought that although the Mode fan base isn't absolutely huge, there still is one and so many people do realize how well the band has done and how good they are. In my opinion I feel that you don't need some silly award to symbolize all the work you've done for the past 25 years. Again, I don't want to sound like a jerk but I feel that the band has accomplished alot over the years and got through a lot of problems and you don't need an award to show or symbolize this. I'm sure Dave means well because if bands like the Spice Girls can get an award then why not DM, right? But it seems like a bit of a fuss over a stupid problem. I'd like to see what Marts and Fletch's opinions are on the matter.

Yes, but I'm sure his pain and confusion over why DM has no respect or major awards is due to the fact that he has lived it for the past 27 years. So after that long, he's a little fed up with it. Even Martin admitted this back in 1990. And it's understandable........not even just with the music industry not acknowledging them ----- but also the main, general public still thinking that DM is just that "80s band" even after everything they have accomplished with every album - I can see why Dave would be "upset."

With Mode it happens all the time. There has been so many times when people have come up to me and said, "Isn't Depeche Mode that band who did People Are People?" They see my tour shirt and are always amazed that they're "still around".
